Ascension News and Comments

Worship with us in the season of Pentecost
Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
On this final Sunday of the church year our gospel is Jesus' great story of judgment. In the end, the faithful are those who served Christ by ministering to those who are poor, hungry, naked, sick, or estranged. In the first reading God is the shepherd who seeks the lost, weak, and injured and feeds them with justice. We gather this day to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet awaiting the consummation of all things yet to come. Acknowledging Christ as our merciful ruler, we go forth that his reign may be known in our loving words and deeds.

Dedication of Homeless Jesus statue
Sunday, November 23 at 10 a.m. worship

Timothy Schmalz’s provocative sculpture, Homeless Jesus, has found a home in metro Phoenix . Thanks to a few very generous donors, the congregation of Ascension Lutheran Church in Paradise Valley will welcome Homeless Jesus to its campus this November.
Though the statue will live on Mockingbird Lane, Homeless Jesus will belong to all the valley’s followers, fans, and friends of the Carpenter of Nazareth. In that spirit, the Ascension congregation is inviting you to the statue’s dedicatory Eucharist this Christ the King Sunday, November 23, 2014, at 10:00 AM. The dedication itself will take place at 11:30 AM, and will be followed by a reception.

A miniature of the statue will be available for purchase at the dedication for $100. Following the dedication, the miniature will be available for $125 through the Ascension Gift Item page. Proceeds from the sale of the miniature will go to the last, the lost, the least, and the little of the valley.

Organ Renovation Project

Phase I of the organ restoration is progressing on schedule. This phase addresses the issues of the organ console and restoration of the windchests, reservoirs and pipework.  The previous interior pneumatic mechanisms of the console have been replaced with solid state components, bringing the organ console to present day acceptable standards. Our existing keyboards of valuable English Ivory have been retained in the new solid state console. Phase I will also add 32’ digital extensions to the pedal division, providing a deep, rich sound; MIDI in and out; record and playback capability; and 99 levels of combination action memory. Pipes and windchests in all divisions have been cleaned and refurbished.
While the pipes were out of the chambers for cleaning, new lighting was installed in both pipe chamber and the damaged drywall from previous water leaks was repaired. Approximately 20% of the organ was operational in time for Dale Niehaus to lead the congregation in "A Mighty Fortress" on Reformation Sunday. A video of the hymn is in the 10/26/14 album of our Photo Gallery.
