Community Outreach

Local Hunger Outreach

l. to r
. Annell Nelson, Karen Brown, Pastor Roger Thompson
, Ardie Senft

The Community Outreach team of Annell Nelson and Karen Brown delivered a check for $3,000.00 to Grace Lutheran Church in Phoenix. This was a donation made possible by the Orpha Hoganson Endowment, which distributes funds for local and world hunger. This money will help Grace Lutheran continue feeding and supporting the homeless. The Outreach team has chosen Grace Lutheran Church as their journey this year. There is also a "Baggie Brigade" for hygiene products, clothes, and summer nourishment needs.

World Hunger Outreach The Community Outreach team also distributed a check for $3,000.00 to ELCA World Hunger, another donation made possible by the Orpha Hoganson Endowment for World Hunger. This money will help the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) commitment to supporting people who live with chronic hunger and poverty around the corner and around the world, which is carried out by ELCA World Hunger through relief, development, education, and advocacy.

ELCA Outreach  We encourage our households to use their monthly special offering envelopes in support of God’s work through the ELCA and the Grand Canyon Synod.

Domestic Disaster  Donations may be designated for the ELCA Domestic Disaster fund to provide relief for the victims of domestic disasters.

World Outreach  Our vision for a Medical Clinic to be built in Dr. Sam Koppula’s hometown, Uppalapadu, India is underway. Dr's. Sam and Moreen are overseeing this project. It is being funded through the Hoganson bequest and member contributions. Construction began on September 12, 2005.

We have also identified a project in India as a Lutheran World Relief mission target. This will be funded through the Hoganson global bequest. This project is in the state of Jharkhand and focuses on empowering tribal women. LWR, in partnership with a local grassroots organization, SPAA, works with impoverished tribal and dalit women seeking to improve their standard of living.

We are looking forward to cultivating a relationship between our congregation and the target communities in India.

Listen to this public service announcement recorded by Faith in Action national spokesperson, Della Reese. Her promotion of this national initiative supports our local VICaP Faith in Action program.  Ms. Reese is making it her personal mission to encouraging more people to volunteer to help their neighbors in need.

A Rewarding Way to Share Your Time

“Volunteer” is the key word when one talks about VICaP Faith in Action goals! Our congregation partners with this exciting 110-congregation-strong partnership.  A VICaP Volunteer is one who takes a few hours (each week or month) to help a homebound and/or disabled adult continue to live independently. You can be a VICaP Faith in Action Volunteer in 2005!  For more information or to register, please contact VICaP, a program of Beatitudes Center D.O.A.R., at 602-285-0543.

Vista del Camino We are collecting non-perishable food for Vista del Camino Food Bank. Special needs are: 6 oz. bags of rice, bags of beans, 18 oz. jars of peanut butter and canned tuna. Please place in the manger at the back of the church. Thank you!

Campbell’s Soup Labels  Thank you for your response in saving Campbell’s labels and General Mills Boxtops for Education! Take a copy of the list from the large Campbell’s Soup can on the Welcome Table to see what other labels can be collected. Remember: We need the front of the label with no rips or folds including the UPC code.  These labels are used to purchase 15-passenger vans for use by the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission at Rock Point.

Navajo Mission  Please remember to save your useable clothing, household items and school supplies to donate to the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission at Rock Point, Arizona. You may place donations in the chest at the back of the church.
