Mealtime
Family Prayers
|
It has often been said, “The family that prays together, stays
together”. It is never too early in life to get into the habit of taking time
from any day’s activities, to reflect on the blessings of that day, and to
share those blessings with family.
Dinnertime is often the only time of the day when the entire family is
able to be together, thus making this the perfect time to focus on God’s
blessings, and share the joy of fellowship with each other.
With that understanding, we have proposed examples of dinnertime
blessings for every age level of a young family, to encourage everyone to
participate, in turn, at least once a week, with a prayer meaningful to the
person at that age.
The joy of praising God, out loud, in front of loved ones, is a wonderful
experience, and can fill the hearts of all the others at that table, thus
putting the day’s events and its possible frustrations down a notch, where
they truly belong… a notch down from the focus on God’s love for us all.

For 5 year old and younger -
God is great, God is good. And we thank him for our food. And bless
Mommy and Daddy, and (brothers and sisters, by name…. possibly even a pet). |
|
12 year old and younger – Come Lord Jesus, be our guest, and
let these gifts to us be blessed. |
|
A unison prayer, spoken by all at the table, together – Come
Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed. Oh, give
thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, and His mercies endure forever. |
|
Adult – Bless this food, oh Lord, to our good use, and us to
thy service, Keep us ever grateful for the good things we have in life, and
give us the heart to share our love with those
around us, and those others in our thoughts. |
Anytime – Lord, thank you for new life. Thank you for each day we
share. Thank you for your amazing love that is shown through all
creation – and through the people you have put in our lives. Thank you
for your precious Spirit who is our breath, vitality, and inspiration.
This day belongs to you. We give you all the honor and glory. Amen. |
