Breakfast
with Grace
|

This
photo was taken June 24th, at 5:45 a.m. in the Ascension Lutheran Church
parking lot....
|

...
as several cars were assembled to take Ascension volunteer workers to
Grace Lutheran Church to help feed the homeless and hungry in downtown
Phoenix.
|
|

Even
though it was very early, it was fun to get together for this worthwhile
event
|

It
was a first event of this type for a few of the participants, who wondered
how many persons would show up to be fed. |
|

The
more we talked the more anxious we became to get going on this venture.
|

Once
the group of volunteers was assembled, we drove to Grace Lutheran Church
to make a lot of pancake breakfasts. |
|

Once
we arrived, coffee had to be made in quantities some of us had never done
before.
|

Butter
had to be cut and placed into many small bowls for distribution to all the
tables. |
|

That
was sure a lot of butter!
|

Tableware
had to be assembled in napkins for the forthcoming breakfast gathering. |
|

The
wrapper group thought it would never end. How many persons would show up,
we wondered.
|

Before
we finished we wrapped over 400 eating utensil sets. That should do
it, we were told. |
|

Pancake
batter had to be mixed, and mixed, and mixed! |

Note
the size of that gigantic mixer! |
|

Preparing
the juice in huge coolers
|

We
ended up making one thousand two hundred pancakes! |
|

Although
it may be a long time before we want pancakes again, they sure looked
pretty! |

But
that's not all! There was also sausage to cook. Lots and lots
of sausage! |
|

Almost
eight hundred of these little rollers!
|

In
the meantime the tables had to be set up with all the condiments and other
stuff. |
|

This
is how the fellowship room looked prior to the mass of bodies that
appeared. |

Guests
lined up outside the hall before 7 o'clock, waiting for the opening bell. |
|

Last
minute instructions were delivered by those in the know... |

...
to those of us who were not in the know. Who is to do what, when,
and where, was discussed.
|
|

The
doors were opened at 7:30 and in they came, hungry and grateful. |

Just
under four hundred persons were served in less than one hour.
|
|

Coffee,
juice, and water were provided for everyone, and second helpings were
encouraged. |

It
was heartwarming for all of us to see first hand how important a project
like this is in our community. God has given us a renewed appreciation for
all that life offers us. |
|

|
Following
the food fest, a worship service was conducted for everyone, with a band
and inspiration for all in attendance, as well as for the regular
congregation members who attended the regular 8:30 worship
experience. Thank you Grace Lutheran for all you do, and to the
Ascension members who helped with this experience. |
